Overview

How the InTouchDesign theme, the Companion plugin and the starter sites fit together, and where to start.

Updated

On this page

InTouchDesign is a WordPress theme for company and business websites. The free InTouchDesign Companion plugin adds starter sites to it: complete example sites that you import into WordPress, then edit as your own.

This documentation describes version 1.3.0 of the theme and of the Companion, including the shop and vehicle modules and the Homeware and CarDealer starter sites of Companion Pro. If your site runs another version, some screens and labels may differ.

The three parts

The InTouchDesign theme

The theme sets the look of your site: the header, the footer, the colors and the fonts. You change them in Appearance › Customize, with a live preview. It also brings 16 block patterns (services, team, case studies, pricing, FAQ and more) in the “InTouchDesign” category of the block inserter.

The theme works on its own. On a brand-new site, the Customizer previews a set of starter pages and creates them only when you click Publish.

The InTouchDesign Companion plugin

The Companion adds an InTouchDesign menu to your dashboard. Its screen has three tabs: Home, Starter Sites and Changelog. It needs the InTouchDesign theme, or a child theme of it, to import a starter site.

It also adds the [itdcompanion_contact_form] shortcode, which shows a Contact Form 7 form when that plugin is active and an “Email Us” button otherwise. See Shortcodes.

Starter sites

A starter site is a set of pages, menus, images and settings for one kind of business. You import it in two separate steps:

  1. Content: pages, menus and images. By default, nothing you already have is overwritten.
  2. Look: colors, fonts, header and footer options, footer widgets, front page and menu locations. A restore point is saved first, so you can undo this step with one click.

Before each step, the screen lists what it will do and waits for you to confirm. Starter sites walks through both steps.

Free and Pro

The free Companion includes one starter site, Corporate. Importing it does not contact any server: everything it needs is inside the plugin.

The Starter Sites tab also shows the Pro starter sites (CarDealer, Homeware, Medical Clinic, PulseFit, Real Estate and Restaurant) with a picture, a description and a link to the live demo. The free plugin cannot import them.

Companion Pro adds:

  • The Pro starter sites, downloaded from the InTouchDesign package server while your licence is active.
  • The block patterns and the stylesheet that each Pro starter site brings with it.
  • Property listings, for the listings of an estate agency, which the Real Estate starter site needs.
  • A Projects module for a portfolio, shown on any page with the [itdcompanion_projects] shortcode.
  • A Shop module that dresses a WooCommerce store in the theme, which the Homeware starter site needs.
  • A Vehicles module for the stock of a car dealership, with a filterable inventory and a finance calculator, which the CarDealer starter site needs.

Companion Pro explains the licence, and what keeps working when it expires.
